Stipends at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton

The programme of stipends for the "School of Historical Studies" at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton is the result of an initiative of the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung. The "School of Historical Studies" was founded in 1935 as the "School of Humanistic Studies". The ties to German scholarship came about through German emigrants and their students, and was particularly intensive up to and into the sixties. The scholarly work at the "Schools" of the Institute for Advanced Study is shaped by the simultaneous presence of permanent "faculty members", "members with long-term appointments", and "visiting members". The common living and working conditions guaranty the "visiting members" an open exchange of ideas and an intensive working atmosphere. As members of the Institute, they have the right to make full use of the teaching and research facilities of Princeton University.

The stipend programme is designed to give German scholars who work in the fields of ancient history, historical studies or the history of art the opportunity of carrying out research projects at the Institute for Advanced Study. Decisions as to which applicants should receive stipends are made by the Institute for Advanced Study.
