Geisteswissenschaften International – Prize for the Support of Translations of Works in the Humanities
The Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels, Verwertungsgesellschaft Wort, the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation promote the translation of outstanding works in the humanities and social sciences into English with the "Geisteswissenschaften International – Prize for the promotion of translation of works in the humanities". The prize includes funding of the translation costs.
The objective of this support for translation is to contribute to the global dissemination of research results in the humanities and at the same time preserve German as a language of science and language in which works in the humanities are published for the first time.
Publishing houses can apply for publications from the field of the humanities and social sciences. They propose titles of their choice and provide a brief statement offering the reasons for their selection. The grant amount is based on individual cases and actual translating costs. An independent selection committee made up of scholars, journalists and publishers of scholarly works chaired by Prof. Luca Giuliani (Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin) selects the books to be promoted two times each year. In addition to the chairperson, the members of the jury are: Prof. Tilman Allert (Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main), Prof. Julika Griem (Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main), Prof. em. Hans Günter Hockerts (Ludwig-Maximilians-University Munich), Prof. Doris Kaufmann (University of Bremen), Prof. Christoph Menke (Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main), Prof. Claus Pias (Leuphana University Lüneburg), Dr. Thomas Sparr (Suhrkamp Verlag), Dr. Julia Voss (Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) und Dr. Judith Wilke-Primavesi (Campus Verlag).
